SOCIAL MOVEMENTS IN A WORLD OF BACKSLIDING DEMOCRACY
While it is fair to say that the COVID-19 pandemic brought much of the world to a near standstill, social movements have been very active during the crisis. To be sure, some movements have been trapped behind the government-mandated lockdowns and restrictions, unsure how to move forward. However, some movements found power in the pandemic as they could organize and voice their concerns on matters such as the assault on labor, diminishing rights, and the erosion of democracy.
With this call for submissions, we primarily intend to explore how social movements articulate their struggles in pandemic conditions or otherwise. We are also interested in contributions that address the backsliding of democracy, particularly in Asia. Potential questions we wish to address include, but not limited to:

What kinds of social movements have the pandemic made (im)possible?

What theoretical perspectives can be employed to grasp the nature of resistance and the state’s subsequent response?

What has been the impact of COVID-19 on democracy in Asia?
It is worth mentioning that we do not wish to restrict contributions to those that foreground the COVID-19 pandemic per se. We will consider all works that address social movements and democratic backsliding in a broader sense, and those fall within the scope of Conflict, Justice, and Decolonization. We accept scholarly articles, conference reviews, documented interviews, and reviews of relevant movies or books.
The articles’ length should be between 2,000 to 3,000 words for English papers and 3,000 to 4,500 characters for papers written in Mandarin.
Selected articles will be published on the CJD website. The authors of selected articles, who are also part of SRCS and IACS programs at National Chiao Tung University, will be awarded 4,000 NTD per article.

The abstracts’ length should be 300 – 400 words for English papers and 450 – 600 characters for papers written in Mandarin. FULL-TEXT ARTICLE IS NOT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE APPLICATION.
