‘SOCIOLOGY 5.0’ IN THE XXI CENTURY

Digital technology is sparking profound social change. These transformations, in turn, place heavy demands on the social sciences. With ‘society 5.0’ taking root in the soil of the Fifth Industrial Revolution, we find ourselves in dire need of fresh sociological perspectives to decode an increasingly knotted social reality. By synthesising secondary data from reputable international academic databases, this paper delves into the history, defining traits, and the push–and–pull of opportunities and challenges inherent in ‘sociology 5.0’ as a burgeoning sub–discipline. In doing so, it positions ‘Sociology 5.0’ as a powerful approach one that not only sheds light on the complex web of social relations in the digital era but also serves as a roadmap for future empirical research.
